In 1970, Congress passed, and then President Nixon signed, into law Title X of teh Public Health Service Act, which makes contraceptives available, and later broadened to provide community-based sex education programs and preventive services to unmarried teenagers at risk of pregnancy including abortion.
The following year, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, established an international program, largely funded by the United States Agency for International Development, that provides family planning services, reaching millions of women and men in developing countries.
On 22 January 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled in the case of Roe v. Wade that it is constitutional right to privacy and women's right to choose abortion. This became the basis for legalizing abortion in the United States.
Live Action, a pro-life advocate group, uncovered on 25 June 2008 a coverup of child sex abuse at an Indiana Planned Parenthood office. And in February 2011, two weeks before the historic vote at the House of Representatives, it released an explosive series of videos that showed Planned Parenthood staff repeatedly willing to aid and abet the trafficking of underage "sex workers" by offering advice to an undercover investigator posing as a "pimp" on how to obtain secret abortoins, contraceptions, and STD tests.
And on 18 February 2011, Friday afternoon, the US House voted 240-185 to strike out all federal funding for the Planned Parenthood. Every year this abortion giant receives hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funding. Indiana-Republican Representative Mike Pence introduced the amendment to the 2011 Federal Spending Bill.
After the vote, Pence issued as statement: This afternoon's vote is a victory for taxpayers and a victory for life. By banning federal funding to Planned Parenthood, Congress has taken a stand for millions of Americans who believe their tax dollars should not be used to subsidize the largest abortion provider in America. I commend my colleagues in both parties for taking a stand for taxpayers and a stand for life.
The amendment will be going before the Senate.
Live Action President, Lila Rose, issued a statement: We applaud those in Congress who championed the safety of women, young girls and children today, and refused to funnel hundreds of millions of tax dollars into an organization that furthers the trafficking of minors and enables sexual abusers. We now turn our attention to the Senate. Now they must examine the facts and move to pull the plug on subsidizing Planned Parenthood's exploitation of the most vulnerable among us. The case to cease funding is crystal clear. But for any Senator who remains unsure, imagine explaining to your constituents that you voted to keep sending $350 million of their tax dollars to an 'non-profit' that puts young girls in harm's way and made $63 million in profits by aborting 300,000 unborn children last year. It's time once and for all to stop financing these activities.
